Vidya Game News – August 30, 2018
Some of the biggest news we’ve heard in a while! From Polygon and a bunch of other sites, Streets of Rage is coming back with a fourth installment, featuring some pretty nifty visuals. Check it out here.- From Japanese Nintendo, a site I didn’t know existed but is wonderful, there will be a double pack of the Famicom and Super Famicom Classics available in Japan. It looks glooorrrrrious. Those systems always had way more style than their American counterparts. Read more here.
- The Verge has a good interview with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, in the week before the series’ 11th installment hits American shores. Early reviews have suggested that if you liked the previous games, you’ll like this one, but that it is unlikely to convert people who don’t love JRPGs already.
- Because of course they would be into that, Capcom developers said they’d be open to remaking the remake of Resident Evil. Them sweet boys love their remakes! Read more from Game Informer’s Ben Reeves here.
- Per Gematsu and the offifical Sega twitter, Switch ports of Sonic and Thunder Force IV have been delayed to September.
- Hey, who DOESN’T want a snazzy watch with Pac-Man?
- The creator of the indie game Owlboy did a mock-up trailer for a Chrono Trigger sequel and it looks wonderful. Look at it here, via TwinFinite, and then cry, because it’ll never happen.

- Former show subjects Crash Bandicoot and DOOM (for the Super Nintendo) turn 22 and 23, respectively! Hopefully those two crazy kids go grab a beer together. – Cinemassacre (the site of the Angry Video Game Nerd) had a viral video this week, as Mike Matei recreated the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme in Mario Paint. Check out the cool video here!
– Russ Frushtick and Justin McElroy of Polygon have a cool video on the tangled history and development of Super Mario Bros. 2. We also covered SMB2 on a past show, by the way.
– On Polygon and other sites, Crash Bandicoot is coming back in remastered form, for the PS4! Check out our past show on ole Crash here.
– Unfortunately, Konami has sent a cease-and-desist to Dejawolfs, which was developing a remake of Castlevania in the Unreal engine. You can read the story on Siliconera here. And reminder! We covered Castlevania on a past show.
– From Variety, Sega has optioned a bunch of its titles for film and television adaptations, starting with Altered Beast and Streets of Rage. And speaking of Sega selling off its merchandising rights, it has also partnered with Build-A-Bear.
– Nintendo Everything has a translation of a Japanese book about The Legend of Zelda series, which reveals that a sequel to Wind Waker was canned for Twilight Princess.
– Geeks of Doom has a positive review of Art of Atari, a cool book full of Atari art.
ON THIS DAY (OR CLOSE TO IT!) IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY…
– On December 9, 1997, Quake II came out for the PC. It was the online standard for a couple years of deathmatching, until Unreal Tournament and eventually Half-Life came out.
– Persona 4 came out for the PS2 on December 9, 2008. It’s a hella good RPG by Atlus, and the fifth installment is due out on April 4, if it’s not delayed again.

Vidya Game News – March 17, 2016
– Hey, the NCAA tournament starts today! While there was a lot of fanfare when the college football series by EA ended, the NCAA Basketball series went with a whimper in 2010. It kind of sucked, since the 2K series was better, but even that ended in 2008. Amusingly, even though it’s not a great game, NCAA Basketball 10 now goes for more than $30 because it’s the last one. (NCAA Football 14 is in the same boat, with prices staying at $25+, although that’s a much better game.)
– Matt Peckham of Time.com, which apparently used to be a magazine, has an interview with Miyamoto on Star Fox Zero.
– I Am Setsuna is the latest new RPG series from Square Enix, and according to IGN, it’s inspired by Chrono Trigger. Nice!
ON THIS DAY IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY…
– We’re finally getting to some decent historical release dates! On this day in 1994, Castlevania: Bloodlines came out for the Genesis. It was the only ’Vania game released for the Genesis, and it was very well-received. (The photo comes from this website.)
– Also for the Genesis in 1994, there was Streets of Rage 3! It was more of the same – basically, that system’s answer to Final Fight – but still good.
– Legend of Legaia, a perfectly average PSX RPG, came out in 1998. From the developer Contrail, it had a sequel in 2001, but otherwise, it hasn’t been prominent.
– Last year, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD came out for the PS4 and Xbox One. It was based on an old Playstation Portable game, and it shows with the weird, frenetic gameplay. Steve just bought it last week for $10 and says it’s pretty passable.

Vidya Game News – May 28, 2015

It’s the debut of a semi-new feature! We’ve scoured some online sites in an attempt to find some retro gamin’ news you might find interesting, to whet your appetite between shows. Except to see regular news posts on Thursdays for the next couple of weeks as we try this out. So, without further adieu…
– Remember how cool The Wizard was? Well… Not actually. But similar to that movie, there will be a 2015 Nintendo World Championships, as reported by Games Radar and tons of other sites. The entry rounds being held at eight Best Buy locations. For more info, go here.
– Just as a technical project, someone is porting Wolfenstein 3D to the Genesis. Like… they’re doing it now, in 2015. You can see a YouTube video here, and there is a message board posting about it here.
– For the Genesis and the SNES, there is a vibrant homebrew / indie scene. Example: here is a Kickstarter for a new SNES (and possibly NES) platform game.
– A port of Dragon Quest VIII is coming out for the 3DS.
– Sega is pulling a bunch of different games from its iOS offerings, per Pocket Gamer. Games removed include Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force and Sonic Spinball.
– On Reddit’s GameCollecting subreddit, someone managed to get their hands on TWO copies of DuckTales 2 at the same time! The subreddit itself has some other nice finds.
– A deep dive from Nintendo Life on the cancellation of Star Fox 2, from someone who worked on the game and played a completed Japanese ROM of it. However, a release and translation are probably unlikely, given legal issues with the now-defunct Argonaut Software.
ON THIS DAY IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY…
– … Well, kind of. Super Mario Bros. the movie was released in 1993, and it bombed. Per Box Office Mojo, it only made $20.9 million on a $48 million production budget. It only opened fourth on its first weekend, behind “classics” like Cliffhanger, Made in America and Dave. It was out of theaters in about four weeks. The full movie is often posted on YouTube, and really, that’s a better option that expending any cash for that trash.
– Notable game releases: Mass Effect (2008), Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (1999), Crazy Taxi 2 and Dark Cloud (2001).
